Something Iâve been wrestling with lately: experiencing conflict (like a gunshot to the arm or leg) and failing to address the deeper issues at hand (the shrapnel left behind).
In October, I attended the Main Street Summit in Columbia, MO. Itâs been a meaningful investment for our team over the past two years, and Iâd recommend attending to any business leader for two reasons: 1) the caliber of attendees and 2) the quality of speakers on stage.
One of those speakers, Jason, shared something that has stuck with me:
âMy wife and I donât have âconflict,â we have âintense fellowshipââŚâ
That line got some laughs from the audience, but it wasnât what resonated with me most. What has stayed with me is the idea of not just addressing conflict head-on, but digging deep to examine all aspects of an issueâensuring nothing is left unresolved.
âIn any conflict,â Jason continued, âyou must draw a circle around yourself and own every element you can. Do some serious self-reflection in the moment and take responsibility. You might need to own 30% of a conflict or 70%, but it is pivotal to own whatâs yours to own.â
And then:
âFinally, once youâve both owned everything thatâs yours to own, pause, take a breath, and ask each other, âWhatâs the remaining 5%?â Whatâs the lingering 5% after the conflict?â
That idea has shifted the way I approach conflict. Whether with Lauren, at work, or in friendships, Iâve found that sometimes taking a brief pause or walk before addressing that final 5% makes all the difference. Because if that lingering piece goes unaddressed, it will resurfaceâmaybe later that day or maybe later that year, or even decades down the line.
I hope to remove the shrapnel before it festers, before infection sets in, and before it becomes a wound thatâs harder to heal.
Lauren and I watched the first episode of Severance season two this week, and within 45 minutes, I was reminded why this might be one of my all-time favorite shows.
Of course, how the rest of season two unfolds could change that.
Still, season one remains one of my favorite TV seasons ever. The brilliant plot, incredible acting, and one of the best cliffhangers in TV history make it unforgettable.
Iâm thankful that the 3-year cliffhanger is finally being resolved. If you havenât watched it yet, I highly recommend binging season one and catching up for the weekly releases of season two!
Two of my favorite actors/characters, Ben Stiller (Uncle Tony) and Adam Scott (Ben Wyatt) are both integral to Severance, and this interview (*SPOILER ALERT*) details the 3-year cliffhanger.
Also the Grand Central Station promo is awesome.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
This guy turned 7 last week^
Music: Still crushing ambient from this talented Brazilian. Selfishly, I donât like artists releasing *one single at a time* but I get the reasoningânew Caleb Gordon / Hulvey. Tyler Childers radio during board game nights (see below) and with friends over.
Food: I finally got Lauren (us) an Air Fryer for Christmas. Game changer and would appreciate any go-to Air Fryer items if you have them!
Podcasts: Can you go into business with your friends? Grateful for this episode rec from my friend, Traci Ketter. And Overreaction Monday with Chiefs heading back to AFCCG.
Reading: The rules to Wingspan, which (thanks to my nephew) is a new favorite board game that Iâm *learning* and reading through its long instruction manual.
